Ray Russell,
a top jazz artist in the U.K., has played guitar on James Bond movie themes and
hits by Tina Turner and Robert Plant. Russell’s tribute to
jazz legend Gil Evans, Goodbye Svengali (Cuneiform) showcases his
own wailing, electrically bristling guitar work. Included is a version of Charlie
Mingus’s “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” with Russell playing to a track
laid down by Evans before his death. BTW: “Svengali” is an anagram of
“Gil Evans.”
