Finally a good
straight-up rock n roll band that doesnt mess around and knows
how to bring out that fiery, trashy sound thats been dead for a while.
It is a band of brothers: Lillian, Eve, and Bosh Berlin.
The Berlin brothers
were born and raised in the socially conservative St. Louis, Missouri, where
their father had a job laying carpet under the attractions at traveling carnivals.
In the early years, the whole family would accompany him around the country
and the boys went on to form a three-piece band with Lillian on guitar and vocals,
Eve on bass, and Bosh on drums. They spent many summers hanging out and jamming
at the carnivals and here there are now with a solid rock debut, Ahead of the
Lions.
Recorded by Steve
Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey), the album certainly contains that rough, open production,
but still maintains a great deal of distance from ever coming off as muddy.
Its fun, its uplifting, its a real hard rock album with 12awesome
tracks thats sometimes The Stooges, sometimes Ramones, and sometimes just
a new cool band called The Living Things!
And what makes
them and their record so much more interesting is that they are not just rockers
they are aware rockers. They are into politics and social issues as much
as they are into Henry Miller and Sylvia Plath. And this collision of emotions
is so audible in tracks like I Owe and God Made Hate.
If youre
sick and tired of the butterfly rock of the 311, Simple Plan, and Good Charlotte,
worry no more because Ahead of the Lions is a ferocious rock effort thats
going to make you feel right at home!
