The Concretes By
Sweden has produced
some very interesting things over the years. They have given us meatballs, stewardesses,
and IKEA which, translated means, "left over screws." They have also
given us some very interesting bands. The 1970a gave us Abba, the 1980s,
Ace of Base, the 1990s, The Cardigans, and the Aughts have brought
us The Concretes. Sounding like the Velvet Underground meets Mazzy Star, The
Concretes eponymous release is the kind of album that you can just chill with.
Lead singer Victoria Bergsman teamed up with her friends Lisa Milberg (drums)
and Maria Eriksson in Stockholm in 1995 and formed the band that has now expanded
to eight members. Its the kind of album youve got to listen to more
than once to catch all the subtle nuances. Milbergs vocals can lull you
into another dimension and then suddenly snap you to attention. Its nice
to see something innovative happening in alternative music. Their live shows
include trumpet, saxophone, glockenspiel, organ, and bells. Outstanding cuts
are ethereal, Say Something New, and whimsical, Warm Night.
Overall, grab a bottle of Aquavit, put on the album, and relax.
