ONE WAY Recommends [Issue #11]
Gelbison
By Mandana Beigi

1704 (CD Astralwerks)

This Australian quartet is nothing like Jet or the Vines or any other rock band that have come from Down Under in the past few years. Gelbison embraces the pop sensibilities and brings out the softer side of rock with their psychedelic, instrumental sound. And they are definitely more of an experimental type of band rather than a formulated one. 1704 is their debut album with 12 tracks ranging anywhere from pop/rock and electronica to folk and mystical instrumental. Among the highlights are the synth and bass driven “Homelands,” the folk/indie “The Modern Station,” and super-emo “Wings.” The beautifully crafted, arranged, and performed “Good God” will make you feel the guilty pleasure of a good epic ballad. “1704” (also the name of the album) is a seven-minute instrumental track with a spooky four-minute melody that perfectly fits the score of a suspense movie and three minutes of pure space-rock. This album is a heartfelt, genius creation of Gelbison, the band that put out their first EP on their own label after playing only one show together! 1704 is a timeless piece of experimental music.
