#13] Kyle Hollingsworth By
Perry B.
Never Odd Or Even
(CD
SCI Fidelity)
String Cheese Incident’s Kyle Hollingsworth has dreamed of making a daring instrumental album like Never Odd Or Even since he stated playing over 20 years ago. Many of the tracks (Don’t Say" and "Seventh Step") will be familiar to fans of the band, who have been playing working versions of the tunes for years. His whirling Hammond B3 organ amazingly grinds and spins through Leslie speakers on "The Bridge." His backing band also takes center stage, as Ross Martin’s slick, burning solos on "Gigawatt." The loose, improvised feel "Boo Boo’s Pik-A-Nik" allows the powerful rhythm section of Matt Spencer (bass) and Dave Watts (drums) to open up and throw down a pounding groove while Hollingsworth’s Barrel House piano and Martin’s chicken pickin’ soar melodically over the honky-tonk romp. Anyone who loves SCI’s quirky songs, organic jams, and experimental feel will savor Hollingsworth’s first offering and will continue to snack on it like, well, a plate of . . . string cheese.
