#13] Bright Eyes By

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
(CD
Saddle Creek Records)
Conor Oberst must not have received the memorandum that the only exports from Nebraska are corn and college football because the buzz that circles around Bright Eyes is like bees swarming around a golden honeycomb. Bright Eyes, which is essentially Conor Oberst’s artistic pseudonym, hails from Omaha and is possibly the most prolific songwriter this side of Ryan Adams. In typical form, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning begins with a nonsensical spoken monologue that lilts into the comforting sounds of “At the Bottom of Everything.” Emmylou Harris lends her radiant voice to blend her harmonies like Scotch and soda with Oberst’s thorny, wistful rasp. The searing refrain, “They go wild” at the close of “Old Soul Song (For the New World Order)” has an ecstatic urgency that makes one remember what having the whole world in front of you felt like. Oberst continues to show unrivaled skill at making a sleeve-worn heart sound amazing.
