#13] Martha Wainwright By
Mandana Beigi
Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole
(CD
Zoe)
Aside from being what we could call a “music royalty” (daughter of folk music giants Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright), what makes Martha Wainwright a good singer/songwriter is her femme fatale lyricism and a style that’s a mix of both Patti Smith and PJ Harvey! The EP consists of five very similar yet different tracks; similar in the sense that melodically they all exude the same mood and different in the stories behind the lyrics and the shifting vocals. “BMFA” (the title song) and “When the Day is Short” demonstrate not only Martha’s talent as a singer/songwriter but also an emotional maturity that enriches her artistic qualities. “How Soon,” written by Carroll Lucas and Jack Owens, was first performed by Owens, but made famous by Frank Sinatra - Martha makes this song her own by these unique feminine emotions that could be heard in her voice. If you are into (or in need of) good, heartfelt, soulful music, Martha Wainwright will definitely not disappoint you.
