Brazilian Girls By
Lynne Bronstein
Brazilian Girls
(CD
Verve)
Theyre
not Brazilian and three of them are guys. The fourth, Sabina Sciubba,
is the singer and lyricist. Together they have created one of the
most bang-up exciting album debuts in years. Their originality comes
from recycling unoriginal styles, the detritus of 40 years of rock,
pop, electronic/dance, ska, bossa nova, and punk woven into one
crazy musical quilt. Sciubbas quirky lyrics and ability to
do quick changes (she sings in English, French, German, and Spanish)
provide much of the invention. She is ambitious enough to set a
Pablo Neruda poem (Me Gustas Cuando Callas or I
Love It When You Shut Up) to music, while her originals include
amusing songs like Corner Shop and Pussy(warning
to decency squads - your kids will love to sing the chorus of this
one). Yet just when you think she and the band have lulled you into
a smoky nightclub with Homme and Lazy Lover,
theyre socking it to you with Sirenes de la Fete,
which sounds like Sergio Mendes partying with New Order. Play this
every day and enjoy a perpetual Mardi Gras.
