Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and Michal Miskiewicz. Say those
names five times fast, if you can even figure out how to pronounce
them! The trio serves up the energy and poise necessary to produce
vibrant tones and richly placed phrases that run up your spine.
With open watercolor etchings springing out of their acoustic paintbrushes,
these young Polish melodic craftsmen use their instruments as artistic
launch pads to create tonal environments and rhythmic feelings in
the vein of the Ahmad Jamal piano trio. While they have gained much
of their exposure from touring under the wing of trumpeter Tomasz
Stanko, the trio has quickly proven itself the tour de force
behind the ensemble. Wasilewski finds the pocket and prances around
in it with understated lines that sneak up on you as the piano,
double-bass, and drum kit surge as one. With Bjork’s “Hyperballad”
and Wayne Shorter’s “Plaza Real” situated alongside
the trio’s original compositions, they play seamlessly through
curvy chord changes moving in and out of ponderous vamps. Who knew
Poland had this much soul?
