With
the release of their tenth album, Ocean Colour Scene has accomplished
something that many of its Brit pop contemporaries such as Oasis
and the Stone Roses have not been able to achieve: constantly making
extremely solid records and maintaining a functional, active career.
On A Hyperactive Workout for the Flying Squad, OCS dabbles
in all the elements that make them great: psychedelic grooves, driving
guitars, ethereal vocals, and stellar pop songwriting. From the
opening blast of “Everything Comes at the Right Time,”
the band grabs the listener’s ear and never lets go. Track
highlights include the affirming “Drive Away” and a long
overdue cover of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass
classic, “Wah Wah.” Collaborations with venerable British
icons such as The Jam's Paul Weller and session journeyman Jools
Holland also greatly benefit the recording. Fans who long for the
glory days of mid-90s British dominance will truly enjoy what may
be Ocean Colour Scene’s finest artistic effort to date.
