Jimmy Chamberlin Complex By
Dean Truitt
Life Begins Again
(CD
Sanctuary)
As
the drummer for Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Chamberlin always pushed
driving grooves on tracks such as Cherub Rock, I
Am One, and countless others as though his life depended on
it. However, he also could play with intricate, subtle nuance and
grace, as with Rhinoceros or Siva. Now that
he is free to pursue other interests, the Joliet, Illinois native
expands his experimental canvas. While the JC Complex does not write
instantly memorable hooks found on his previous bands albums,
it is not necessarily the groups goal. Chamberlin and his
collaborator Billy Mohler seem to care more about creating sonic
landscapes than dashing off delectable pop candy. The album greatly
benefits from numerous guest appearances: Catherine Wheels
Rob Dickinson and his own former bandleader, Billy Corgan. While
Corgan does not lend any of his incendiary guitar work, he does
offer his quirky voice, inimitable voice to the track, Loki
Cat. The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex ultimately offers an impressive
debut and anyone wishing to experience a masterful percussionist
should discover this album and attend a show on their upcoming tour.
