I don’t
know what it is with Australia. These past few years the country
“down under” has produced - and mind you, keeps producing
at an amazing rate, some serious talent. Well, this particular one
has been brewin’ for a while, releasing his first record in
his mid-teens back in the nineties. Now in his twenties, Ben is
delving ahead towards musical maturity with Awake Is The New
Sleep (New West), a mellow and low-key yet powerfully truthful
gem. Ben wrote all the songs on this CD and Brad Wood is the person
responsible for the bare-bones simple, clear-cut production that
accentuates the songs without adding any unwanted production “baggage.”
“Whatever It Is” with its eerie step melody works as a
serving tray for a delightful dish consisting of equal portions
of inspiration and support to encourage the listener to “just
do it, whatever it is,” where “Gamble Everything For Love”
is a song that Bob Marley could have easily written if he listened
to Elliott Smith and lived in Seattle. “Ache For You”
sports a great opening world-timbre beat while “Light”
is a nine-minute amalgam of Ben’s hidden desires. Well done
