Merge a Dublin
pub session with fierce country blue grass music, and you end up with Psychograss,
a toe-tapping, string plucking steam engine. With Darol Anger on violin, Mike
Marshall on mandolin, David Grier on guitar, Todd Phillips on acoustic bass,
and Tony Trischka on banjo, these guys move through thumping riffs and pentatonics
with their nimble fingers firing away. Now Hear This is a slice of Americana
that approaches bluegrass music with fine-tuned arrangements as road maps. Yet,
they still leave enough room for roaming the open road via surging cadences,
swift dynamics, and open solo sections. Their songs evolve naturally and leave
room to breathe while reminding you of the reasons to remember to exhale from
time to time. “Look What the Dog Brought Home” charges along, while
“In the Lion’s Den” stands tall. “Stroll of the Mudbug”
ho hums with glee, while “Scary” adopts a minor mystique. As their
countryside colors stir your thought, may Psychograss up the ante on
the rusty old rocking chair in your imagination.
