Lost And Safe
(CD
Tomlab)
The Books are perhaps
one of the most creative and unique musical acts to have come from the indie-east-coast
scene within the last few years. They maintain a notorious library of found
sounds and samples from the random unmarked audiotapes they purchase at the
Salvation Armies and public libraries! And what for? Well, thats why youve
got to listen to Lost and Safe- their third full-length release, which
is yet another mesmerizing collage of found music, string work, and vocals.
It Never Changes to Stop, Venice, and An Animated
Description of Mr. Maps beautifully reflect that haunting vibe of found
sounds, their textures and rhythms. The Books nail the melodic and emotional
side of their exploration by the depth of songs such as Smells Like Content
and If Not Now, Whenever. I wish I could explain the product sound
of a set of tuned plastic drain pipes, a cheap metal filing cabinet with subwoofers
installed in it, and a vintage Hohner clavinet into words but lets leave
that to be the amazing experience of listening to The Books for the first time
(if you havent already). Lost and Safe is as sheer and sharp as
experimental music gets.
