Feelin’ Good: Live In Studio
(CD
Mack Avenue)
Terry Gibbs brings
a fresh energy to the table, swinging like guitarist Pat Martinos recent
live recordings (probably due to the fact that Joey DeFrancesco hits the Hammond
B3 organ as hard here as he does there), but with a traditional approach found
in Lionel Hamptons recordings with Benny Goodman and Stan Getz. It even
manages to groove like the blues playing of Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine,
and Jimmy Smith. The disc appropriately includes a bossa version of Turrentines
Sugar. Throughout the album, Eric Alexander takes strident risks
on tenor saxophone, but maintains a close sense of where the progressions are
and where theyre headed. And Terrys son, Gerry Gibbs, strikes the
drums with a crisp shuffle to support his dad. Yes, Terry has swung himself
right into the new century swinging years younger than the 80 years hes
lived, but with a refined touch that only comes with years of experience. Feelin
Good is firmly rooted in driving swing that makes sure to pair each Be with
a capital Bop!
