Gimme Fiction
(CD
Merge)
Austins indie
rock phenomenon, Spoon, unleashes their third consecutive artistic triumph with
Gimme Fiction. As the opening track, The Beast and Dragon, Adored,
eerily saunters into the ears, the chaotic undertones set the stage for a hauntingly
powerful album. Vocalist, Britt Daniels caustic lyrical stabs are masterfully
complemented by producer Mike McCarthys anarchistic aural landscapes.
While their latest effort may not be quite as effervescently pop-driven as the
previous two releases (Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight),
the lugubrious, occasionally macabre feel of Gimme Fiction seems perfectly suited
for the bands latest effort. However, there are still several contagious
sonic confections on the LP; Sister Jack, I Turn My Camera
On, and I Summon You will definitely appeal to those who enjoy
Spoons left-of-center hooky writing style that rivals the monumental work
of The Pixies or Guided By Voices. Though Gimme Fictions release is long
overdue, Spoon once again takes chances artistically and generously rewards
their growing legion of fans with yet another exceptional release.
