All My Life
(CD
Azica)
Singer Barbara
Rosene first gained some attention for making two recordings, Deep Night and
Evrythings Made For Love, for the Stomp Off label. Those discs feature
her singing standards and obscurities from the 1920s, hinting at Annette Hanshaw
and Ruth Etting. All My Life is quite a bit different for Ms. Rosene interprets
songs from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. A creative and warm swing singer,
she has a beautiful voice and a subtle improvising style that fits the material
quite well. Joined by an excellent jazz quintet that includes trumpeter Simon
Wettenhall, Peter Martinez on clarinet and tenor, and pianist Tom Roberts, the
singer makes the vintage songs sound fresh, lively and sometimes touching. Of
the 13 numbers, particularly memorable are these versions of Till Then,
Fools Rush In, Trust In Me, and It Could Happen
To You. Barbara Rosene obviously knows the meaning behind the lyrics and
digs deep to bring out some hidden beauty even in the more familiar songs such
as Stairway To The Stars and Youd Be So Nice To Come
Home To. All My Life is a constant joy and highly recommended.
