Chaos And Creation In The Backyard
(CD
Capitol)
Ever since officially
disbanding The Beatles on April 10, 1970, the world has unfairly bemoaned much
of Paul McCartneys solo material. Though some of it has been lackluster
at best (Back to the Egg, Off the Ground), most of the scorn derives from the
fact that the man had previously composed and performed some of the greatest
music in human history. On his 20th post-Beatles release in a 35-year period,
McCartney challenged himself by tapping maverick producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead,
Beck) to ignite his drive and passion. Perhaps Godrichs chief asset was
that he encouraged Sir Paul to play almost every instrument, with the exception
of contributions from hailed studio greats such as Jason Falkner. Consequently,
Chaos is possibly Maccas most solo outing in decades. The
songs are quite interesting and many, such as Riding to Vanity Fair,
sound like nothing he has ever recorded previously. Other standouts include
the first single, Fine Line, and the quintessential McCartney track,
English Tea. As Paul nears actually turning 64, the world does indeed
still need him.
