The Legend Of Johnny Cash
(CD
Capitol)
While this latest
collection in a string of packages that have emerged in the Johnny Cash oeuvre,
The Legend of Johnny Cash from Hip-O Records deserves attention for a number
of reasons. To successfully chronicle the Man in Blacks 48-year recording
career on one CD with a mere 21 tracks might come across as a slight insult
to the iconoclastic pioneer; however, one must keep in mind that the purpose
of such an archive is to provide an overview document for existing admirers
as well as introduce a new generation to Cashs brilliance. Each song serves
as a time capsule of not only the artists life, but the last 50 years
of American history. The Kris Kristofferson-penned Sunday Morning Coming
Down is a stunning self-reflection while the covers of Soundgardens
Rusty Cage and Nine Inch Nails Hurt prove that
Cash had the rare ability to remain both current and timeless simultaneously.
While Rick Rubins production guidance probably deserves resounding credit
for steering the maverick artist back into mainstream popularity, Johnny Cash
was always a legend.
