I have to admit
that when I got this record in the mail I got both scared and angry!!! Here
is somebody, a publicist, label, artist, whoever, that has no idea what music
we cover here at ONE WAY and just sent us this horrible, scream-o, hard core,
blow-your-brains-out band called Screaming Headless Torsos! Just being curious,
and without looking at any of the press materials, I put this in my iPod. Wow!
I was totally blown away, but not by what I thought I would hear, but by what
I was hearing! The Torsos are an incredible amalgam of rock, jazz, sca, reggae,
funk, r&b, avant-garde, spoken word, experimental; you name it! Jaco meets
James Brown, in creeps Living Color and Coltrane type o thing. Lead singer
Dean Bowmans soulful voice and creative scatting and phrasing flow immaculately
on the, at times, stream of consciousness, heavily political lyrics, complementing
the incredible work of guitarist David Fiuczynski, and bassist Fima Ephrons
grooves, percussionist Daniel Sadownicks luscious accents, and drummer
Gene Lakes solid beatsthe glue that holds everything together. Freedom
Bremner also lends his talent on guest vocals on three tracks. Listen to the
incredible arrangement on Smile At Me and be sure you check out
Bowmans phrasing and the solo on Faith In The Free as well
as the guitar-vocal duel between Dean and David on Just for Now.
So there! For now I will go get a couple of soft-serves from my favorite neighborhood
ice cream truck. I really enjoy those tunes these little trucks play. Arent
they killer? They lure me in for some reason. Dont know why! I think the
guys of the Torsos enjoy them very much as well; right guys?
