#19] Zodiac Suite Revisited By
Lynne Bronstein
The Mary Lou Williams Collective
(CD
Mary)
Maybe its due to gender bias but somehow Mary Lou Williams has not received
her due as one of the all-time jazz greats. At least the 2002 reference book Jazz:
The New York Times Essential Library includes Williams on its Top 100 Artists
List largely because of Zodiac Suite, a musical tone poem that rates
comparison to the works of Ellington and Gershwin. Geri Allen, whose own accomplishments
as a keyboard artist should assure her a place in future top artist lists, has
recorded this version of Williams ode to astrology under the supervision
of Williams onetime manager, Father Peter F. OBrien. Accompanied by
bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Hart, she renders Williams perceptions
of the zodiac signs with piano chords that at times sound like harp strums and
at other times like the ramblings of a nocturnal gumshoe, her fingers channeling
the moodiness and edginess of Williams Aries, the dancing and
hopping of Gemini, and the thrashing chords of the head-butting goat
Capricorn (my sign). Bonuses include Williams Intermission
and Allens tribute to Williams: Thank You Madam. Sumptuous
and magical-its a must for your list.
