ONE WAY Recommends [Issue
#19] The New Amsterdams By
Peter Vouras
Story Like A Scar
(CD
Vagrant)
The last band to come
out of Lawrence, Kansas was in fact, Kansas. Well move over Grandpa and welcome
The New Amsterdams. Not enough good things can be said about this band. They're
about as complicated as a warm breeze blowing through the wheat fields. Simple
melodies, killer hooks, and a laid back feel make up the majority of the album.
Lead singer Matt Pryor, who for ten years was the lead singer of The Get Up Kids,
has a great voice and really knows how to compose a song. The musical journey
begins with the haunting "The Death Of Us" and moves lazily like a leaf
on the "Kaw." (what the locals call the Kansas River). "Bad Liar,"
Pryor's take on the break-up of his former band, summons early R.E.M. a la Fables
Of The Reconstruction. "Your Ghost" is a slow, heartfelt look at
loss with a moving cello solo transitioning into an amazing gut wrenching guitar
solo. Every cut on Story Like A Star is a winner. Carry on my wayward sons!
