Tres Chicas By
Lynne Bronstein
Bloom, Red, And The Ordinary Girl
(CD
Yep Roc)
Mainstream country
has the Dixie Chicks; alt-country has Tres Chicas. Comprised of Whiskytowns
Caitlin Cary, Glory Fountains Lynn Blakely, and Hazeldines Tonya Lamm,
the trio, on their second album, assume the personae of the three-pronged title.
Blakely, the Bloom, wrote All The Shade Trees in Bloom,
an easygoing ballad of yearning for love. Her smooth voice and gentle acoustic
guitar style are displayed on other quietly passionate songs like Sway
and Slip So Easily. Cary is Red, in spirit if not in tooth
and claw. The violin-playing middle member co-wrote Red
with Blakely and its lyrics (I dont wish you well and Ill see
you in hell and Im sitting here burning your letters) are as shamelessly
cynical about love as youll ever encounter. And Tonya Lamm, the Ordinary
Girl from the song My Love contributes electric guitar and adds
to the groups sensual harmonies. Soft but sharp, sweet but tart, lyrically
vivid, Tres Chicas have delivered an album that could cross over to mainstream
country but will doubtless do best with those who like their country with a bit
of spice.
