Isobel Campbell/mark Lanegan By
Dave Lewis
Ballad Of The Broken Seas
(CD
V2)
At fist glance, the
pairing of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan seems an odd one. Campbell is best
known for her stint with Scottish twee poppers, Belle and Sebastian, while Lanegan
was in grunge mainstays Screaming Trees, and, later, Queens of the Stone Age.
Ballad of the Broken Seas, which was largely recorded with Cambpell in Glasgow
while Lanegan recorded his parts in Los Angeles, quickly puts to rest any misgivings
music listeners may have about the collaboration. Campbell contributes lush orchestral
pop sounds highlighting her adorably soft singing voice while Lanegan offers dark,
Cash-like vocals that are spoken as much as they are sung. The largely acoustic
tracks are augmented by rockabilly guitar leads, subdued strings (Campbell plays
cello), and low-key synth effects. The result is a haunting, cinematic album with
a folk-country flair. The rocking Honey Child What Can I Do? and the
quirky piano-driven Dusty Wreath are the highlights. The Campbell
collaboration is one of many for the prolific Lanegan, who moonlights as one-half
of the Gutter Twins with former Afghan Wigs frontman Greg Dulli.
