Lady And The Bird
(CD
Yellow Tangerine)
Lady and Bird is both the name of this concept album and the duo composed of singer-songwriters
Keren Ann and Bardi Johannson. Their self-described childrens story
for adults, told in a series of ten songs, is the story of two mysterious
creatures who are children in the bodies of grown-ups. Their electronically
altered voices occasionally speak to us as trapped children who believe no one
is hearing them. The tone is sad and the eventual denouement seems inevitable.
The singing voices of Keren Ann and Johannson blend eerily into one voice that
drifts through the gentle songs in a manner reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins,
although here at least are audible lyrics that speak of fields of flowers and
alienation. The two cover songs included in the saga are the Velvet Undergrounds
Stephanie Says, which seems to have been included for its enigmatic
tone, and the famous M*A*S*H theme Suicide Is Painless which presages
the climax. Deceptive in its simplicity and soothing sound, Lady and Bird leads
the listener down a primrose path to a tragic ending that lingers in the mind.
