Lush Life: The Untold Story Of Billy Strayhorn
(CD
Blue Note)
Billy Strayhorn is
without a doubt one of the most important contributors to the Great American Songbook,
and certainly, one of the more unsung legends in relation to his output. In the
same way novices often mistakenly credit Dave Brubeck instead of Paul Desmond
for “Take Five,” Strayhorn’s namesake has often taken second stage to Duke Ellington
throughout his recordings. Strayhorn compositions have been registered as Ellington/Strayhorn
pieces, collaborations attributed only to Ellington, and in some instances, Strayhorn
received no recognition whatsoever. Several of these are included on the soundtrack
for the remarkable new documentary that showcases Strayhorn’s life. Tracks include
“Day Dream,” “Something to Live For,” and “Satin Doll.” “Take the ‘A’ Train,”
one of Strayhorn’s best known compositions, is noticeably absent from the mix.
Nevertheless, the compilation boasts an abundance of modern renditions of Strayhorn
classics laid down by pianist Bill Charlap, vocalist Dianne Reeves, and saxophonist
Joe Lovano just to list the front men. For certain, Ellingtonia carries the weight
that it does thanks to Mr. Strayhorn.
