Don’t Tell Columbus
(CD
Bloodshot)
Graham Parker is back
and up to his old tricks. That is, hes writing songs with intelligent lyrics,
dry humor, and social consciousness, playing in a semi-acoustic style, playing
most of the instruments (including a kazoo!), and ignoring all musical trends
(thank goodness!) Parker, after all, has been around to survive AOR rock, punk,
New Wave, and folk revival. Dont Tell Columbus is the sort of record
that would have made some other songwriters reputation back in the late
1970s. Sometimes Parker is acerbic in his proto-punk mode (Englands
Latest Clown). Sometimes he leans toward the gloomy side, his outlook on
love and life summed up by titles like Love Or Delusion, Ambiguous,
and the rocking Total Eclipse of the Moon. But then again, he finds
a guarded optimism on tracks like Hard Side Of The Rain (You
cant win every battle, but you can win some). And even when he gripes,
too much intelligence gets n the way in Stick to the Plan,
he does not take his own satirical advice.
