#4] Jaco Pastorius By
"Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology
Often cited as the
Jimi Hendrix of the electric bass, Jaco Pastorius revolutionized that instrument
like no other musician has before or since. Rhino's elegantly packaged 2-Disc
anthology Punk Jazz collects the best of Jaco's fretwork. With Weather
Report, and as a collaborator with such diverse luminaries as Pat Metheny and
Joni Mitchell, Jaco helped provide a crucial link between jazz and rock. Because
Jaco played with so many groups in his short career, this anthology almost plays
like a mix CD. This helps illuminate the fact that, like Hendrix, Jaco drew from
a large pool of influences in his playing. Jaco's legendary virtuosity, inexhaustible
energy, and startling creativity are all on display in tunes like "Birdland,"
"Continuum" and "The Chicken." "3 Views of a Secret"
and "Good Morning Anya" also highlight Jaco's underrated skills as a
composer and arranger. As the first major U.S. anthology of Jaco's work, Punk
Jazz succeeds on every level. It offers a detailed overview of the late bassist's
best music, and serves as a great introduction to new fans.
