#4] Christopher O' Riley By
True Love Waits - Christopher O'Riley Plays Radiohead
It's not often that
a classical musician does an album with appeal to rock fans. But with this collection
of Radiohead covers, classical star Christopher O' Riley proves that he understands
the oddball British band's sonic experiments. Using only a piano, O'Riley renders
15 Radiohead songs, including Kid A's "Everything In Its' Right Place,"
and "Motion Picture Soundtrack," and The Bends "Fake Plastic Trees"
and "Black Star." These are instrumentals but elevator music they're
not. Rather, they showcase the classical roots behind the seemingly quirky compositional
techniques that make Radiohead's works difficult for many people. O' Riley's mastery
of the keyboard is such that the listener may be surprised to realize that there
are no other instruments accompanying him. The melodies, isolated from the lyrics
and Thom Yorke's voice on the originals, are allowed to come to the forefront,
revealing themselves to be graceful yet moody and passionate chamber music. This
album is one of those rarities: classical music for those who usually don't like
classical, and intellectual prog-rock made accessible to those who'd plug up their
ears at the sound of an electric guitar.
