The Polyphonic Spree
By Dean Truitt

Beginning Stages Of . . . (CD Hollywood)

Only a madman or genius would create a 27-member "choral symphonic pop band" after the tragic dissolution of a successful alternative rock group. However, ex-Tripping Daisy frontman Tim DeLaughter had the nerve to undertake such an adventure with The Polyphonic Spree and has lifted it off the ground. The Dallas-based ensemble is clearly the most unique group in years. Amazingly, their debut album, The Beginning Stages of..., is a delightful, charming collection of wide-eyed anthems that bring a smile to the face and joyful tears to the eyes. The closest comparison to the stylistic approach and power of The Polyphonic Spree's material is the four-minute ending of The Beatles' "Hey Jude;" the emotional strength seems to grow, rather than fade, with each echoing refrain. Donning acolyte robes for live performance, the group's presentation is a combination of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Banana Splits. Even the most skeptical cynic could not help but sing along with these simple, heartfelt songs. Through sheer determination and joyous optimism, The Polyphonic Spree appears to be gathering momentum. Shine on, you crazy Texans.
