#5] Leaves By
Leaves are highly skilled sculptors of sonic atmospheres in the
tradition of Sigur Ros and Coldplay. Their extremely impressive
debut effort Breathe is laced with hypnotic hooks, lingering melodies,
and lush production, all of which will appeal to anyone possessing
an affinity with indie prog rock. Although some might argue that
the album is not stylistically completely original, the sheer strength
of the songwriting lifts the collection to venerable credibility.
"Crazy," the first single, is instantly unforgettable
and endearing. Compositions such as "We" and "Alone
In The Sun" render desolate mantras over waves of astral texture.
Another stunning quality about the album is the group's ability
to retain a central theme and focus while comfortably shifting gears
between relaxed terrain and pulsing currents. Every song beautifully
unfolds into the next in a surrealistic stream of consciousness
that alternately soothes and inspires. As with both Radiohead and
Coldplay, one cannot help but believe that Breathe, for all its
enormous potential, merely hints at the monumental strides this
band will cover in the coming years.
