#6] Perry Blake By
Inspired by Arif
Mardin, Jimmy Webb and Curtis Mayfield, newcomer Perry Blake is a revelation.
California is a modern classic of atmospheric love songs and shimmering
grooves. His third album since 1999's Still Life, California is brimming
with billowing strings, choral voices, ringing electronica touches and most
importantly, melodies that will lift you above the muck and mire. Blake's a
sentimental twenty-something enamored of Barry Gibb, Burt Bacharach and Scott
Walker and with a talent almost as big as his heroes. Blake cinematic sound
creats a misty European landscape of mournful men and maddeningly beautiful
women destined for misery and mayhem. Nothing detours these willowy songs, not
the corny choral voices, the Barry Manilow worthy arrangements, or a California
derived theme that doesn't really work. But the album remains a mighty achievement.
