ONE WAY Recommends [Issue
#7] Hymie’s Basement By
self-titled debut CD offers exactly what you would expect from a collaboration
between Fogs Andrew Broder and Anticons Jonathan Wolf (AKA Why?).
The two prolific producer/performers have crafted a strange, loose-knit collection
of tracks (most of them cant really be called songs) that were
recorded in the basement of a Minneapolis record store (hence the name of the
group). Spoken word diatribes and haunted, lo-fi vocals exist over glitchy beats,
strange instrumentation, loopy samples and beautiful keyboard and turntable
work. The lyrics are quirky (Our font is bigger than your font/Our font
will crush your font), as expected, but mesh perfectly with the experimental
nature of the music. Separately, Broder and Wolf are expanding the boundaries
of underground Hip-Hop to unrecognizable degrees, but together, as Hymies
Basement, they go even further. The result is as difficult as it is rewarding.
