Starsailor
By James Garrigus

Silence Is Easy (CD Capitol)

When Starsailor released their debut album, Love Is Easy, in 2001, they were heralded by many critics to be “Britain’s best new band,” following in the footsteps of bands like Travis and Coldplay. Now the quartet comprised of James Walsh (vocals/guitar), James Stelfox (bass), Ben Byrne (drums), and Barry Westhead (keyboards) return with their follow-up release, Silence Is Easy, a more accessible album but just as lush and well-crafted as their first. Some critics may find Silence Is Easy too predictable, but it should strike a chord with a much larger audience with its introspective lyrics, catchy melodies, beautiful (but not over-the-top) string arrangements, great production, and overall less-is-more approach. What I enjoyed most about Silence Is Easy is that it’s one of those rare albums that sound great played straight through, no “skip-over” tracks. From the pulsing Phil Spector-produced “Silence Is Easy,” to the Neil Young-influenced “Shark Food,” to the funky disco-grooved “Four To The Floor,” with an unexpected bongo/drum break, to the sweet “Born Again” song of revival, Silence Is Easy is a solid progression for this very talented, young band. So, sit back, enjoy, and let the music wash over you.
