What sounds like A Foreign Sound to Caetano Veloso is, in fact, a pretty familiar sound for most of us. Backed by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, Veloso covers 22 memorable songs, which, in one way or another, define the popular American music at different times. Rarely a cover measures up to the original version, yet Veloso has wonderfully created 22 irresistible renditions that are just as good, if not better, than the original songs. Veloso and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra take the all time American “Feelings” to a whole new level by emphasizing more on the instruments than on the melodrama of the lyrics. Among the highlights of the album are a spine-tingling cover of Cole Porter’s “Love For Sale” and a moving cover of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are,” which paints Cobain’s melody with much softer tones. From the torchy “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and Gershwin’s “Body and Soul” to Bob Dylan’s “It’s Alright Ma,” A Foreign Sound is the ultimate American songbook recreated by the Brazilian pop giant who has given a new identify to each song by his simple yet unique arrangements.
